What is the SAP S/4HANA integration module?

The SAP S/4HANA integration module for OpenMES connects your manufacturing execution system with SAP S/4HANA – the enterprise ERP platform that runs the world’s largest manufacturing operations. The module bridges the gap between S/4HANA’s production planning (PP/PP-PI) and OpenMES’s real-time shop floor data capture, delivering automated confirmations, material postings, and quality notifications without middleware complexity.

This is a paid module – pricing depends on integration scope (number of plants, order types, material flows), deployment model, and customization. Contact us for a quote.

Why integrate OpenMES with S/4HANA?

S/4HANA provides world-class production planning, materials management, and quality management. But its shop floor execution capabilities – even with PP/DS and MII – require significant configuration and often still leave a gap between what the planner schedules and what the operator experiences at the machine. Manual confirmations at end-of-shift, delayed goods movements, and disconnected quality inspections are common even in S/4HANA-centric environments.

OpenMES sits at the edge, directly connected to machines, PLCs, and operator terminals. It captures every cycle, every defect, every downtime event in real time. The S/4HANA module then translates these events into the SAP transactions that planners, warehouse managers, and quality engineers expect – production confirmations, goods movements, inspection lots, and batch records – posted automatically as they happen.

How the integration works

The module supports multiple connectivity paths to S/4HANA: OData v2/v4 APIs (for S/4HANA Cloud Public and Private editions), RFC/BAPI calls (for on-premise), and compatibility with SAP Integration Suite (CPI/CI) for mediated integration patterns. Authentication supports X.509 certificates, OAuth 2.0, and SAP principal propagation.

Key data flows

  • Production / Process Orders – Released orders in S/4HANA are received by OpenMES for execution. OpenMES tracks operations, captures actual times, quantities, and scrap, then posts process confirmations (CO11N equivalent) back to S/4HANA.
  • Goods Movements – Material consumption (261), goods receipt from production (101), scrap postings (531), and by-product receipt are posted as MIGO-equivalent transactions in real time.
  • BOMs and Routings – Production BOMs (CS01/CS02) and routings (CA01/CA02) with operations and components are imported into OpenMES. Change numbers ensure revision traceability.
  • Batch Management – Batch numbers created or consumed during production are synchronized, maintaining batch genealogy (where-used, where-produced) across both systems.
  • Quality Notifications – Defects and non-conformances detected on the shop floor create quality notifications (QM-QN) in S/4HANA with defect codes, quantities, and root cause references.

Supported versions

The module supports S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition, S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition, and S/4HANA on-premise 2021+. ECC 6.0 EHP8 may be supported via RFC/BAPI path – contact us for assessment.
