What is the ERPNext integration module?
The ERPNext integration module for OpenMES connects your manufacturing execution system with ERPNext – the leading open-source ERP platform built on the Frappe framework. Both OpenMES and ERPNext share an open-source philosophy, making this a natural pairing: ERPNext handles your business operations (sales, purchasing, accounting, HR), while OpenMES handles real-time shop floor execution, machine connectivity, and production data capture.
This is a community module – available at no cost for self-hosted ERPNext installations. Enterprise support and custom configurations are available as paid services.
Why integrate OpenMES with ERPNext?
ERPNext includes a manufacturing module with work orders, BOMs, job cards, and quality inspection. For simple production environments it works well. But as manufacturing complexity grows – multiple machines, real-time tracking, OEE requirements, SPC, and machine-level data capture – ERPNext’s web-based job cards become a bottleneck. Operators need offline-capable terminals, and managers need real-time dashboards that update every cycle, not every page refresh.
OpenMES provides that industrial-grade execution layer. It captures production events at machine speed and translates them into ERPNext transactions: stock entries (manufacture type), job card completions, quality inspections, and batch records – all posted via the Frappe API, fully traceable, and immediately visible in ERPNext’s reports.
How the integration works
The module communicates with ERPNext via the Frappe REST API, using API keys or OAuth 2.0 for authentication. ERPNext webhooks trigger OpenMES updates in real time (e.g., when a work order is submitted). Both ERPNext Cloud (Frappe Cloud) and self-hosted ERPNext deployments are supported.
Key data flows
- Work Orders – Submitted work orders in ERPNext are received by OpenMES. OpenMES creates and tracks job cards, captures actual production data, and posts stock entries (manufacture type) back to ERPNext on completion.
- BOMs – Bills of Materials from ERPNext are imported and kept in sync. Multi-level BOMs and operations are supported.
- Stock Entries – Material consumption, finished goods receipt, and scrap generate stock entries in ERPNext with correct warehouse assignments, batches, and serial numbers.
- Quality Inspection – Inspection results from OpenMES create Quality Inspection records in ERPNext, linked to the source item, batch, and work order.
- Batch / Serial – Batch and serial numbers assigned during production are synchronized for full genealogy and traceability.
Supported versions
The module supports ERPNext v14 and v15 (Frappe v14/v15). Both Frappe Cloud and self-hosted installations are supported. ERPNext v13 is end-of-life and not officially supported.
