What is the Business Central integration module?

The Dynamics 365 Business Central integration module for OpenMES connects your manufacturing execution system with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central – the cloud-first ERP platform for small and midsize enterprises within the Microsoft ecosystem. The module creates a seamless data pipeline between Business Central’s production planning and OpenMES’s real-time shop floor tracking, so production orders, inventory movements, and quality records stay synchronized across both systems.

This is a paid module – pricing depends on the number of Business Central environments, data volume, and customization requirements. Contact us for a quote.

Why integrate OpenMES with Business Central?

Business Central provides production order management, BOM maintenance, and capacity planning. But its manufacturing module is designed for ERP-level planning granularity – not for capturing individual machine cycles, real-time OEE, or inline SPC data on the shop floor. The result: operators enter production results manually, often at end-of-shift, creating a data gap that cascades into inaccurate inventory, delayed invoicing, and poor production visibility.

OpenMES closes that gap by executing production at machine speed and reporting results back to Business Central in real time – finished quantities, scrap, material consumption, and quality measurements – as structured journal entries that Business Central can process immediately.

How the integration works

The module communicates with Business Central through its standard OData v4 REST APIs and custom API pages where needed. Authentication uses Azure AD (Entra ID) OAuth 2.0 with client credentials or delegated flows. Both Business Central Online (SaaS) and Business Central on-premise/hybrid deployments are supported.

Key data flows

  • Production Orders – Released production orders in Business Central are pulled into OpenMES for shop floor execution. OpenMES tracks cycles, labor, and downtime, then posts output journal lines and consumption journal lines back to Business Central.
  • BOMs and Routings – Production BOMs and routings maintained in Business Central are imported into OpenMES. Changes trigger version updates so the floor always works with current specifications.
  • Inventory Postings – Material consumption and finished goods output generate item journal entries in Business Central, keeping stock quantities accurate without manual posting.
  • Lot / Serial Tracking – Item tracking codes (lot and serial numbers) assigned during production are synchronized between both systems for full genealogy.
  • Quality – Inspection and measurement data recorded in OpenMES can be linked to Business Central quality orders or exported as structured records for compliance documentation.

Supported versions

The module supports Dynamics 365 Business Central Online (current wave) and Business Central on-premise 2023 wave 2 (v23+). Older NAV versions (Dynamics NAV 2018) may be supported via custom API pages – contact us for compatibility assessment.
