System Settings
System Settings hold the main configuration for your entire OpenMES instance. They control production rules, scheduling, security, module activation, and data import/export. Only administrators can edit them.
General
The General tab controls language and currency settings for the entire system. These settings affect how numbers, dates, and monetary values are displayed throughout the application for all users.
- Language – Select the default interface language. All menus, labels, and system messages will use this language.
- Currency – Set the currency symbol and format used in cost calculations, reports, and financial summaries.
Production
The Production tab defines how manufacturing operations are tracked and governed across the system.
Production Period Splitting
Controls how production is broken into reporting periods. Choose between:
- By Shift – Production is grouped by the shift during which it occurred.
- By Calendar Day – Production is grouped by calendar date.
- Custom Windows – Define custom time windows for production reporting.
Workflow Mode
Determines how work orders move through production steps. Select the workflow mode that matches your factory floor process.
Production Rules
- Overproduction – Choose how the system handles production beyond the ordered quantity:
- Allow – Operators can produce any amount beyond the target.
- Warn – The system displays a warning when the target is exceeded.
- Block – The system prevents reporting more than the ordered quantity.
- Sequential Step Enforcement – When enabled, operators must complete production steps in the defined order and cannot skip ahead.
- Workstation Routing – Controls whether work orders are locked to specific workstations or can be processed at any compatible machine.
- Backflush – When enabled, material consumption is automatically deducted from inventory when production is reported, based on the bill of materials.
Schedule
The Schedule tab configures how the Production Planner displays and calculates planned work.
- View Mode – Set the default view for the production planner (e.g., daily, weekly, or timeline view).
- Shifts Per Day – Define how many shifts your factory runs per day. This affects capacity calculations and scheduling slots.
- Planning Horizon – Set how far into the future the planner displays. A longer horizon gives more visibility but may reduce performance with large datasets.
- Realtime Updates – When enabled, the planner automatically refreshes to reflect production progress and status changes without requiring a manual page reload.
Security
The Security tab manages authentication methods and cross-origin access policies.
Authentication
- PIN Login – Enable numeric PIN-based login for shop floor operators. This provides a faster login method on touch-screen terminals without requiring a full username and password.
CORS (Cross-Origin Resource Sharing)
Configure which external domains are allowed to make API requests to your OpenMES instance. This is required when integrating with external dashboards, mobile applications, or third-party tools that run on a different domain.
Modules
Enable or disable feature areas of OpenMES. A disabled module is hidden from the navigation menu, and its pages return a 404 error. This lets you simplify the interface by showing only the features your team actually uses.
Core areas – Dashboard, Orders, Production, and Admin – are always enabled and cannot be turned off.
Optional modules you can toggle:
- Reports
- Advanced Reports
- Materials & Tracing
- Product Engineering
- Companies
- Issues & Reasons
- Company Structure
- HR
- Maintenance & QC
- Connectivity
- Packaging
- Webhooks
Data
The Data tab provides tools for loading sample data, exporting and importing system configuration, creating backups, and resetting the system.
Sample Data
Load a pre-built dataset to explore OpenMES features without entering real production data. Useful for evaluation and training.
Export Settings
Download your complete system configuration as a JSON file. This includes all settings, custom fields, dashboard layouts, and module states – but not production data.
Import Settings
Upload a previously exported configuration file to restore or replicate settings across instances.
Backup & Recovery
- Full Backup – Creates a complete backup of the database including all configuration and production data.
- Data-Only Backup – Backs up production data without system configuration.
- Restore – Upload a backup file to restore the system to a previous state.
Reset System
Wipe all data and return the system to a clean state. This action is irreversible and should only be used during initial setup or testing.
